The unique design of supercapacitors allows for rapid charge and discharge cycles. While batteries typically offer higher energy density and longer-term storage, supercapacitors excel in delivering quick bursts of energy. Additionally, these capacitors endure numerous charge/discharge cycles and offer high power density.
The specific power of supercapacitors far exceeds that of the lithium-ion battery. Since supercapacitors charge and discharge so quickly, they are excellent candidates for energy storage during regenerative braking of hybrid and electric vehicles. Supercapacitors are also being applied to large-scale energy storage in renewable energy applications.
The first type of supercapacitors are the electrostatic double layer capacitors. These supercapacitors consist of a separator, an electrolyte and two electrodes. The electrolyte is a mixture containing negative and positive ions dissolved in water. A separator separates the two electrodes of these capacitors.
