View moreMozambique has abundant energy sources available for exploitation. As of 2021, the country was ranked first in energy potential of all the countries in the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), with an estimated energy capacity of 187,000 MW. Available energy sources include coal, hydroelectricity, natural gas, solar energy and wind power.
This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of Mozambique's energy transition, focusing on integrating a hybrid solar-wind system with green hydrogen storage. It discusses Mozambique's renewable energy potential, particularly in solar and wind, and the country's efforts to meet increasing energy demands sustainably.
The centerpiece of Mozambique’s energy potential is the Cahora Bassa Dam on the upper Zambezi. Financed and constructed by an international consortium at the close of the colonial era, it was designed in cooperation with South Africa’s national power company to produce electricity largely for South Africa, not Mozambique.
However, Mozambique has great potential for solar energy, with average annual temperatures between 20°C and 30°C and a significant solar irradiance of 5 to 6 kWh/m²/day .
