The framework addresses the grids immediate and near-term needs by supporting the incorporation of electricity storage from the immediate up until 2040 and presents 10 government actions to support the role of electricity storage systems in Ireland’s energy transition, identifying the key stakeholders and timelines for these actions.
The framework emphasises that ESS are vital to supporting Ireland’s transition to a renewable energy-led electricity grid. The framework highlights three core functions of electricity storage. Electricity storage systems 10 policy actions
Two memos setting out future plans for development of electricity storage, which will allow excess renewables to be stored and used when needed, and for private wires have been approved by Cabinet. The latter will allow community energy groups, private individuals or other energy users to run their own electricity cables to transfer electricity.
