Are there any vanadium flow batteries in the United States?

The United States has some vanadium flow battery installations, albeit at a smaller scale. One is a microgrid pilot project in California that was completed in January 2022.

Is vanadium good for flow batteries?

Vanadium is ideal for flow batteries because it doesn’t degrade unless there’s a leak causing the material to flow from one tank through the membrane to the other side. Even in that case, MIT researchers say the cross-contamination is temporary, and only the oxidation states will be affected.

Are flow batteries worth it?

While this might appear steep at first, over time, flow batteries can deliver value due to their longevity and scalability. Operational expenditures (OPEX), on the other hand, are ongoing costs associated with the use of the battery. This includes maintenance, replacement parts, and energy costs for operation.

When were vanadium flow batteries invented?

In the 1980s, the University of New South Wales in Australia started to develop vanadium flow batteries (VFBs). Soon after, Zn-based RFBs were widely reported to be in use due to the high adaptability of Zn-metal anodes to aqueous systems, with Zn/Br2 systems being among the first to be reported.
