Pumped storage hydropower stores energy and provides services for the electrical grid. This Review discusses the types, applications and broader effects of this form of grid-scale energy storage.
The results demonstrate that technically the pumped hydro storage with wind and PV is an ideal solution to achieve energy autonomy and to increase its flexibility and reliability.
According to the typical daily loads and renewable energy output, it is determined that the total installed capacity of the small hydropower and pumped storage needs to reach 1200 MW. The optimized capacity allocation scheme for the hybrid energy system with an energy storage is 500 MW for a pumped storage and 700 MW for a small hydropower.
