In recent years, high-temperature water/wastewater treatment has become an emerging area of high priority interest for industries such as oil and gas, food production, and power plants, which require the separation of impurities from wastewater at elevated temperatures to recycle the treated water.
In high-temperature TES, energy is stored at temperatures ranging from 100°C to above 500°C. High-temperature technologies can be used for short- or long-term storage, similar to low-temperature technologies, and they can also be categorised as sensible, latent and thermochemical storage of heat and cooling (Table 6.4).
To maximize energy recovery in municipal wastewater treatment plants, the high-rate contact stabilization and activated sludge (HiCS–AS) process—consisting of a two-stage sequencing batch reactor—represents a promising technology for the efficient recovery of organic matter from wastewater as sludge that can be readily converted to methane.
