View moreIt is the biggest player in the Ethiopian energy sector. EEP owns and operates the national power grid, including all high-voltage lines (over 66 kV), all the associated substations and nearly all the power stations on the grid (some power plants belong to the state-owned Ethiopian Sugar Corporation).
Despite its leadership in renewable energy, nearly 50% of Ethiopia’s population still lacks access to reliable electricity.
The corresponding price for units of electricity over the 500 kWh threshold for a single month is ETB 1,1410/kWh (USD 0,04/kWh). In 2013/14, the former Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation was split into two separate units: Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) and Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU).
Ethiopia’s energy strategy is strongly anchored in hydropower, but long-term resilience depends on accelerating the development of solar and wind energy. To avoid overreliance on a single source, the government must fast-track grid integration and enhances private sector participation through Independent Power Producer (IPP) schemes.
