View morePicture Conor McCabe Photography. Dublin Airport officially opened its solar farm on Monday as it commits to 20 per cent of the airport’s annual electricity needs coming from renewable solar energy by 2030. Some 15,000 solar panels have been installed on the 28-acre site, which is located close to the south runway and visible from the R102.
He added: “Investing in renewable solar energy and exploring the potential of geothermal sets Dublin Airport up for the future and helps the airport meet its commitment to reducing its emissions by 51 per cent by 2030. I’m delighted to be here with the daa on this really impressive solar farm just short of 30 acres and 15,000 solar panels.
Cork Airport is also progressing plans for solar power onsite. It is designing an elevated solar farm over the existing ‘Holiday Blue’ surface carpark which will be submitted for planning in the next 12 months. It is intended that this 1.8 MWp solar farm will deliver up to 30% of Cork Airport’s energy needs when complete.
Now operational, the 9MWp solar farm is expected to generate 7GWh to 9GWh of electricity each year, which is 10% – 13% of Dublin Airport’s annual consumption. This is sufficient to cover the electricity needs of the entire airfield, with excess electricity contributing to the energy needs of the airport terminals and campus.
