View moreIn this work, we first introduce the concept of utility-scale portable energy storage systems (PESS) and discuss the economics of a practical design that consists of an electric truck, energy storage, and necessary energy conversion systems.
A typical PESS integrates utility-scale energy storage (e.g., battery packs), energy conversion systems, and vehicles (e.g., trucks, trains, or even ships).
We introduce the potential applications of utility-scale portable energy storage and investigate its economics in California using a spatiotemporal decision model that determines the optimal operation and transportation schedules of portable storage.
The model is applied to study the economics of this PESS design in California, in which the PESS helps integrate renewable energy and relieve grid congestion at the same time. We find that compared with the stationary energy storage system (SESS), the life-cycle revenue of PESS can be 70% higher in some areas.
