View moreThe thermal runaway gas explosion hazard in BESS was systematically studied. To further grasp the failure process and explosion hazard of battery thermal runaway gas, numerical modeling and investigation were carried out based on a severe battery fire and explosion accident in a lithium-ion battery energy storage system (LIBESS) in China.
The fire burned one battery unit and 416 battery packs. The causes of thermal runaway of LIBs mainly include mechanical abuse represented by inter-cell collision and extrusion, pinprick , electrical abuse represented by battery overcharge, fast charging, internal short circuit and thermal abuse represented by high temperature .
In view of the analysis of the complexity of socio-technical systems, there are few cases in which the battery energy storage industry uses system analysis methods to carry out cause analysis. Therefore, based on the STAMP model, the thermal runaway diffusion explosion accident of the BESS was systematically analyzed.
